What HEIC is and why you would convert it
HEIC is the photo format iPhones have used by default since iOS 11. It stores the same picture in about half the space of a JPG, which is great for your phone but a problem everywhere else: Windows Photos without the HEIF extension, older Android phones, government and school upload forms, and many websites either refuse the file or show a broken image. When someone says "my iPhone photos won't open", the cause is almost always HEIC, and the reliable fix is converting to JPG, which opens on anything.
How to use this converter
Drop your HEIC files onto the box above or tap it to pick them. Conversion starts immediately, one file after another, and each finished photo gets its own download button. If you added several, use Download all as ZIP to grab them in one file. Moving the quality slider re-encodes the files that are already done, so you can compare sizes without re-adding anything. Rotation stored in the photo (portrait shots, for example) is applied automatically, and the pixel dimensions match the original.
Your photos stay on your device
There is no conversion server. The decoder, libheif, is downloaded as WebAssembly and runs on your own device, so your photos never travel over the internet and there is no upload or download queue. On browsers that can already read HEIC natively, such as Safari on iPhone and Mac, the tool skips the download entirely and uses the built-in decoder, which is faster still.
What changes when you convert
Camera metadata (EXIF) is not carried over into the JPG. If you need the location or capture date, keep the original HEIC as well. Photos shot in 10-bit HDR are saved as ordinary 8-bit JPG, so the very brightest highlights may lose a little gradation. To shoot JPG from now on, open Settings → Camera → Formats on your iPhone and choose Most Compatible. To have photos converted automatically when copying to a computer, choose Automatic under Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC.
FAQ
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Your files never leave this device. The decoder (libheif) runs as WebAssembly inside your browser, and the JPG output is created in memory and saved straight to your downloads. Closing the tab clears everything.
Does converting lose quality?
JPG is a lossy format, so the result is not bit-identical to the original. The default 90% quality is hard to tell apart by eye, and you can move the slider anywhere from 50% to 100%. Pixel dimensions stay the same.
Can I make my iPhone shoot JPG instead of HEIC?
Yes. Go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose 'Most Compatible'. New photos will be saved as JPG. Photos you already took as HEIC can be converted here.
Some files will not convert. Why?
Files that are only named .heic but contain something else, damaged files, and image sequences (.heics) are not supported. Apple ProRAW (.dng) and the video half of Live Photos are also out of scope. Try exporting the photo again from your Photos app.
